SERVICES: Dr Sassone personally performs all sonograms in the office, with state-of-the-art equipment. This approach has the advantage of direct feedback from the patient and allows for immediate explanation/discussion of the findings. She performs sonograms to identify pathology of the uterus, ovaries, tubes, urethra, bladder and the pelvic floor; she also utilizes sonography to guide cyst aspiration and other surgical procedures. Ultrasound guidance enhances accuracy and shortens the performance time. Dr. Sassone is a member of The International Society of ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. From 1986 to 1990, she had the opportunity to study under the guidance of Dr. Timor Tritch, one of the pioneer in the field, who was then director of Ob/Gyn Ultrasound Service at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Their shared interest in early detection of ovarian cancer brought to the publication, in 1991, the first reliably reproducible ultrasound score for the interpretation of pelvic masses ("Transvaginal Sonographic Characterization of Ovarian Disease: Evaluation of a New Scoring System to Predict Ovarian Malignancy,"A. Margherita Sassone, Ilan E. Timor-Tritch, Attila Artner, Carolyn Westhoff, and Wendy B Warren; Obstetrics and Gynecology, 78: 1, 70, 1991).
